Festival 2010 – ⌘ / Place of Interest

Doverodde Book Arts Festival II took place May 14-16^th, 2010 and was, like the previous year, host to several events: an international themed exhibition: ⌘ / Place of Interest, talks, workshops, small happenings and one collected stand area where the artists could show, sell and discuss their work with visitors. (The first year of the Festival the stands were spread across two floors of the building.)

The Reading Corner was moved to its permanent location in the upper gallery space for visitors to browse through the growing book arts collection.

The tradition of the Book Café – designed to the occasion by puppet maker and set designer Lena Hansen – was restored with a new look.

The guest of honour D.Phil. Else Marie Bukdahl, former president of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen opened the Festival on Friday the 14th of May. (Her opening speech can be read in Danish here.

The chairman of the board of the Limfjordscentret Niels Peter Riis and Centre Director Karin Nikolaus also spoke a few words. The music trio: Morgentau from Kassel, Germany accompanied the whole opening ceremony. To put the final mark on the occasion a unique cake had been made for all to enjoy.

On Saturday May 15^th a list of talks had been arranged, three of which were by the research staff from the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) at the University of West England, Bristol.

Paul Laidler – Recording Landscape

This talk/workshop took place on the 3^rd floor of the Tower of the Limfjordscentret and participants were encouraged to bring their own camera. Paul then went through the process of how to produce and stitch panoramic photographs of the landscape for digital print and books. Tom Sowden – The art of laser cutting paper

The talk discussed how artists are using the laser cutter as a creative tool, with examples of artists’ works on paper and artists’ books.

Sarah Bodman – Artists' books, nature, landscape

This was a themed talk of collections and observations of nature, talking about: textscapes, journeys through landscape, working in the landscape, the politics of landscape, altered books and nature, and a darker (then lighter) side of nature.

Sarah is Senior Research Fellow for Artists' Books at CFPR, where she runs projects investigating and promoting contemporary book arts.

Anne Bossenbroek-Bouchard

In the afternoon French/Dutch artist Anne Bossenbroek-Bouchard gave a talk about her bookworks, Mail Art and Artist trading cards.

Workshops

Over the course of the 3 days a range of workshops took placed organized by the artists themselves in the Creative Workshop at the Limfjordscentret.

Events

A few events also took place during the Festival around the building:

In the Reading Corner – Angie Butler demonstrated and talked about her new permanent space at the Limfjordscentret: Pet Galerie – The Book Jacket. A gallery/installation in the form of a coat peg rack with a traditional English tweed jacket and a cap hiding stories and treasures to be discovered. Anne-Dorthe Grigaff told folk tales to children in the Historical exhibition by the lady spinning wool yarns.

A group from the Bookbinding evening class at Holstebro Activity Center had set up their own workshop area for the second year running and were mending old worn books using traditional equipment and demonstrating techniques of the old craft.

In the evening of the Saturday May 15^th "tradition" had it that all participants got together for a social evening with buffet and music by Morgentau.

A Place of Interest by Sarah Bodman and Tom Sowden

As in 2009 Sarah Bodman and Tom Sowden made a collaborative artist’s book to the annual theme: A Place of Interest. The piece was created en route during the drive and ferry crossing between Bristol, UK and Doverodde, DK using a typewriter, Polaroid camera and GPS.

A collaborative video of the journey and making of the book was also produced with the help of fellow travellers on the trip: Angie Butler, Paul Laidler, Natalie McGrorty, Simon Smith, Sarah Bodman and Tom Sowden. Watch the video here.

A Place of Interest – DIY in 6 steps

You can download a pdf of the book to print and assemble yourself.

Step 1: Download the pdf file: A Place of Interest

Step 2: Set your print/page set up to A4 landscape.

Step 3: Print as follow

(Sarah and Tom used recycled cream paper for their original copies.)

1-2 print: Page 1 is the cover – page 2 inside cover is blank

3-4 print double sided

5-6 print double sided

7-8 print double sided

9-10 print double sided

Step 4: Score down the middle of each page with a bonefolder.

Step 5: To assemble the pile of pages, start with the page 1 and 2 place with the cover face down, then place page 3-4 so Sarah and Tom's signatures are facing up, then page 5-6 so the image of the disused building is facing up, 7-8 so the little summer cabin is face up, 9-10 so the image of the ship's deck is face up.

Step 6: Staple in the middle and fold all the pages over so the title is on the front page.

Hussein Tai – a special exhibition of prints

After the Festival weekend the Limfjordscentret hosted a special exhibition of copperplate prints by Iraqi/Danish artist Hussein Tai from May 18-JuneX, 2010. He had also taken part in the whole Festival exhibiting a piece in the themed exhibition and holding a stand.

⌘ / Place of Interest on tour
In August of 2010 the international themed exhibition: ⌘ / Place of Interest was taken on tour to Sjælland (Zealand), Denmark to be exhibited at the Grafisk Værksted (Print Studio for Artists) as part of two municipalities: Næstved and Faxe Literature Festival. Jan Kiowsky organized the exhibition.

One-day workshop 2010

On Thursday May 13^th, 2010 the first one-day workshop was held as part of the Doverodde Book Arts Festival 2010. The day began with a guided walk by nature guide Søren Kiel who took the group to nearby Ydby Heath where he spoke about the history of the area and its wildlife and plants.

Around mid-day the group returned to the Limfjordscentret to begin processing the experience and transforming it into a book. Designer and book artist Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck then took the group through the technique of the Piano Hinge Binding originally devised by Hedi Kyle, USA.

Harmonica Book Project

Diploma from the Childrens Book of Records, 2010

For the 2010 Festival former schoolteacher, Kathleen Elizabeth (Liz) Hempel-Jørgensen initiated the Harmonica Book Project – a collaboration of teachers and children from the regional schools to aim at making the longest harmonica book in Denmark.

Each participating school class would receive instructions and materials of how to contribute to this unique book. The theme of the book was the same as the theme of the 2010 Festival: ⌘ / Place of Interest.

Each child was provided with a sheet of paper (H: 21cm x W: 14.5 cm) for the teachers to connect into a part of the growing harmonica book.

The final book was measured to be 129,92 meters and was entered into the Children’s Book of Records. It was exhibited at the Limfjordscentret from May 13^th – June 20^th, 2010.

Thy Bottle-Top Badge Project

Inspired by coming to the Festival in 2009 and being given a bag of Danish bottle-tops to bring back to the UK for artist Becky Adams – to make more of her 'Bottle-top Badges' – Angie Butler came up with the idea of the 'Thy Bottle-Top Badge Project'.

Still at that point an MA student at the University of West England (Bristol, UK) Angie organised her fellow students from the Artists Book Club (ABC) and other artists to make unique badges to be donated to the Doverodde Book Arts Center to then be auctioned at the Limfjordscentret. The proceeds from the sales would then be used to purchase artists' books for the Doverodde Book Arts Center Collection, a small but growing collection thanks to donations and initiatives like this.

Over the course of a year badges began arriving to the Doverodde Book Arts Center and Angie Butler finally managed to call for two rounds of her project.

Each participant joining received a bag with a note of instructions and a badge making kit containing: 1 bottle top, 1 kilt pin and 3 split rings. The participating artist would then make a badge post it back to Angie in the bag along with 50 pence to contribute for materials costs.

It is still possible to buy some of the unique badges in the shop at the Limfjordscentret for the modest price of 150 DKK a piece. See more about the project here.
